ʻŌhiʻa Lehua
Scientific Name: Metrosideros polymorpha
Natural Setting / Location: Endemic to Hawaiian Islands in a wide range of habitats: lava fields, dry to wet forests, and bogs
The ʻōhiʻa lehua is a sturdy tree whose flowers come in bright and fiery orange, yellow, pink and red. From moʻolelo, the tree and its flowers are associated with Hawaiian fire goddess Pele. It is also a kinolau, or physical manifestation, of several other Hawaiian gods and goddesses including Kū, Hiʻiaka, Kāne, Kapoʻulakīnaʻu as well as Laka, the goddess of hula.
